Steve Jobs, the iconic co-founder and former CEO of Apple, is set to be recognized with a unique $1 coin issued by the U.S. Mint in 2026.
The $1 Jobs coin - priced at $13.25 upon its release next year - showcases the tech leader as a young individual "seated in front of a classic northern California scene featuring oak-dotted rolling hills," as stated by the U.S. Mint. "His body language and look, frozen in a moment of contemplation, illustrate how this setting influenced his idea to make complicated technology as simple and natural as the environment itself."
The coin features the words "Steve Jobs" and "Make Something Wonderful," which is the title of a 2023 book compiling Jobs' writings, interviews, and speeches.
Jobs passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2011At 56 years old, the former two-time CEO of Apple introduced a range of groundbreaking computers, such as the Apple II, one of the earliest mass-produced personal computers, and the Macintosh. He also led the development of game-changing products like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. Additionally, Jobs co-founded and served as CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, where he helped create the first fully computer-animated feature film, "Toy Story."
California Governor Gavin Newsom had previously this year selected Jobs to be featured on the state's American Innovation Coin. "Innovation and California are closely linked, and Steve Jobs represents the distinct type of innovation that California is known for: innovation that isn't solely motivated by business, but rather serves as a means to permanently transform the world," Newsom stated.
Steve Jobs, who was born in San Francisco and lived most of his life in California, once commented on the state, "California has a feeling of innovation and a sense of openness - openness and new opportunities - that I didn't fully understand until I visited other places."
The upcoming Jobs coin is included in the Mint's "American Innovation" $1 coin series. Introduced in 2018, the designs are intended to represent "symbols of innovation" across each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories.
Three additional American Innovation coins for 2026 will highlight Dr. Norman Borlaug, the agricultural leader known as "the father of the Green Revolution" (Iowa); the Cray-1 supercomputer (Wisconsin); and mobile refrigeration, depicted with a 1940s truck equipped with an early front-mounted cooling system (Minnesota).
The front side (also known as the heads side) of the American Innovation $1 Coins showcases "a striking depiction of the Statue of Liberty in profile" along with the inscriptions "In God We Trust" and "$1." As stated by the U.S. Mint, each year's front design also features a distinct privy mark that includes a stylized gear symbolizing industry and innovation; the 2026 coins' privy mark will additionally feature a Liberty Bell with the inscription "250" to honor the country's semiquincentennial anniversary. The inscriptions on the edge are "2026," the mint mark, and "E Pluribus Unum."
